DIY Pet Snuffle Mat

Three years ago we adopted a Boxer from our local shelter. He’s a gentle, loyal dog, but at first he didn’t really know how to play with toys. Over time he learned, and now he loves interactive play. Recently I made him a snuffle mat to hide treats in, and he adores it. This easy project works for both dogs and cats and is a great way to encourage natural foraging behavior while keeping your pet mentally stimulated.

About Hank

Our Boxer is Hank. He spends a lot of time lounging on the bed and keeping watch at the front window. The moment he spots anything — a person, another animal, or even a stray leaf — he launches into full alert mode, sprinting and barking to announce the “intruder.” Giving him gentle mental exercises helps burn off that restless energy and keeps him happily occupied when he’s not on guard duty.

What is a Snuffle Mat?

A snuffle mat is a textured mat made to mimic grass and ground cover where pets can search for hidden food. It encourages natural sniffing and foraging behaviors by hiding small treats among fabric strips. The game slows fast eaters, provides mental stimulation, and gives pets a focused activity that satisfies their instinct to search and hunt.

Materials and Tools

For a durable, safe snuffle mat you don’t need fancy supplies. I used items that are inexpensive and easy to source.

1 yard of fleece or other knit fabric (polar fleece, cotton knit, bamboo or hemp knit are all good choices)
1 plastic dish sink mat or plastic base with holes (a clear sink mat from a dollar store works well)
Small training treats or tiny pieces of kibble for hiding

Fabric Choices and Safety

Choose fabrics that won’t fray easily. Avoid loosely woven cottons or flannel that can come apart and be swallowed with treats. Polar fleece and knit fabrics are ideal because they hold up well, are soft on noses, and don’t shed threads the way woven fabrics do. Old t-shirts cut into strips also work if they are knit cotton.

How to Assemble the Snuffle Mat

Assembly is straightforward and can be completed in about 30 minutes:

Cut the fabric into roughly 1-inch wide strips.
Trim those strips into pieces about 6 inches long.
Tie each 6-inch strip through the holes of the plastic mat with a simple knot, filling the mat so that the fabric creates dense layers and hiding places.
Continue knotting pieces until the entire mat is covered and the fabric is fluffy enough to conceal treats.

How to Use the Mat with Your Pet

Scatter small training treats in the folds of the fabric and let your pet sniff them out. Use tiny, low-calorie treats so you can hide several without overfeeding. This activity can occupy pets for a long period — my Boxer Hank often spends 20–30 minutes searching for everything. It’s a perfect afternoon enrichment game for when he’s restless, and sometimes he’ll even ask for it on his own.
