Dairy Free Buffalo Chicken Dip is one of my favorite appetizers for game day and tailgating. All the bold, cheesy flavors are still present in this dairy-free version — it’s creamy, spicy, and crowd-pleasing without any dairy. It’s also naturally gluten-free when served with gluten-free dippers, making it a great option for groups with dietary restrictions.

I use a few easy-to-find dairy-free products to achieve that classic buffalo dip texture and flavor. You can swap brands to suit your pantry or preferences. If you enjoy buffalo-style recipes, try adapting this filling for sliders, stuffed vegetables, or even egg rolls by substituting dairy-free alternatives.

Dairy Free Ingredients
- Dairy-free cream cheese: Brands like Kite Hill, Miyoko’s, and Violife work well for a thick, creamy base.
- Dairy-free ranch: Traditional ranch contains buttermilk, so use a dairy-free ranch dressing of your choice. Many brands now offer plant-based ranch that mimics the tangy flavor.
- Dairy-free buffalo sauce: Buffalo sauce combines hot sauce and butter. Use a prepared dairy-free buffalo sauce or mix your favorite hot sauce with a plant butter (such as a plant-based spread) to get the same buttery heat.
Chicken Options
Shredded chicken works best for dipping — it mixes evenly into the base and is easy to scoop. You can shred a store-bought rotisserie chicken or poach chicken breasts at home and shred them with two forks. Leftover roasted or grilled chicken can also be used.

Baking Dish
Serve this dip hot and bubbling right out of the oven for the best results. A cast iron skillet is ideal: it looks rustic and presentable on the table and holds heat longer than glass or ceramic. If you don’t have cast iron, any oven-safe baking dish will do.

Dip Variations
Base Variations
- Coconut cream: Adds richness and a silky texture without dairy.
- Cashew cream: Blend soaked cashews with water, lemon juice, and garlic for a smooth, tangy base.
Flavor Enhancements
- Garlic lovers: Add roasted garlic or a pinch of garlic powder for more depth.
- Smoky twist: Stir in smoked paprika or a touch of chipotle for a smoky buffalo note.
- Herb addition: Fresh parsley, cilantro, or dill brighten the finished dip.
Texture Additions
- Crispy toppings: Sprinkle breadcrumbs or crushed tortilla chips on top before baking for crunch.
- Dairy-free cheese: Add shredded dairy-free mozzarella or cheddar on top and bake until bubbly.
Spice Customizations
- Extra spicy: Add cayenne pepper or chopped jalapeños.
- Mild version: Use a milder hot sauce or reduce the buffalo sauce to tame the heat.

Creative Ways To Serve The Dip
- Buffalo chicken sliders: Spread inside mini buns, add shredded lettuce or pickles and a drizzle of dairy-free ranch.
- Stuffed veggies: Fill mini bell peppers, zucchini boats, or mushrooms, top with dairy-free cheese or breadcrumbs, and bake.
- Buffalo nachos: Layer tortilla chips, spoon dip over, add dairy-free cheese and toppings, then bake until warm.
- Buffalo wraps: Spread inside a tortilla or lettuce leaf, add crunchy vegetables, and roll for an easy handheld.
- Stuffed baked potatoes: Mix the warm dip with scooped potato centers for a hearty side or appetizer.
- Mini cups: Use phyllo shells, wonton wrappers, or mini tortilla cups for individual bites; bake until crispy and garnish with green onions.

What To Serve This With
Choosing the right dippers and sides elevates the dip — offer a variety of textures and flavors so guests can customize each bite.
Classic dippers
- Chips: Tortilla chips, pita chips, or crunchy plant-based chips.
- Veggies: Celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber slices, bell pepper strips, or cherry tomatoes for a fresher option.
- Crackers: Gluten-free crackers, pretzel crisps, or seeded crackers for added crunch.
Bread options
- Baguette slices: Lightly toasted for a sturdy base.
- Pita bread: Pita rounds or triangles work well.
- Breadsticks or soft pretzels: Great for scooping and add a salty, hearty contrast.
