Once you try “boiling” eggs in an air fryer, you’ll find they’re ideal for meal prep, snacks, deviled eggs, egg salad, and more. There’s virtually no mess: place cold eggs in the basket, cook, transfer to an ice bath, then peel or store.

What you Need

You only need two things:

  • Air fryer – We tested this method in a 4-quart Ninja, a 5.8-quart model, and compact units. It works in most brands and sizes, but always consult your air fryer manual for safety and specific guidance.
  • Eggs – Use cold eggs straight from the refrigerator. Regular, large, and extra-large chicken eggs all work; adjust time slightly for very large eggs.

Our unit is a 4-quart Ninja and it performs consistently for daily breakfast prep.

Directions with Pictures

An air fryer cooks like a compact convection oven: hot air circulates around the eggs and cooks them evenly. The basic method is below, with images showing each step.

  1. Place cold eggs in the air fryer basket. Use a trivet or the fryer’s rack if you have one to keep eggs from rolling. They don’t need to be elevated far—just off the base.
  2. Set the air fryer to 250 °F and cook according to the desired doneness (timing details are below). For a firm center yolk I use 16 minutes for large eggs and add about one minute for extra-large eggs.
    • Note: Preheating is optional. If you preheat, reduce the cook time slightly (for example, reduce a 17-minute cycle by a minute or two depending on your preheat duration).
  3. When cooking finishes, use tongs or a spoon to transfer eggs immediately to a bowl of ice water. The ice bath stops residual cooking and makes peeling easier. Cool for at least 5 minutes or until the eggs are cool to the touch.
  4. Peel and eat, or dry and store the eggs in the refrigerator (peeled or unpeeled). See storage recommendations below.

Timing

Air fryers vary, so these times are a reliable starting point. Adjust by a minute or two to match your preference and appliance.

  • Soft-boiled eggs – 11 to 12 minutes at 250°F.
  • Medium-boiled eggs – 13 to 14 minutes at 250°F.
  • Hard-boiled eggs – 15 to 17 minutes at 250°F.

How to Peel

Peeling becomes easy when eggs are cooled and handled correctly. These pointers help:

  • Freshness matters: Very fresh eggs are harder to peel because the inner membrane adheres more tightly to the shell. Slightly older eggs tend to release more cleanly.
  • Cool completely: Let eggs sit in an ice bath for at least 5 minutes. Cooling firms the white and contracts it away from the shell, making the shell easier to remove.
  • Start at the ends and be gentle: Tap the ends to create a small gap, then roll the egg gently to crack the shell all around. Peel under running water if needed to help separate bits of shell.

Storage

Follow food-safety guidelines: refrigerate or eat within two hours of cooking.

Refrigerator: Store unpeeled eggs in an airtight container for up to one week. Peeled eggs will keep for up to five days when stored in the fridge.

Freezer: Only egg yolks freeze well; whites become rubbery. Freeze yolks in an airtight container for up to two months.

FAQ

Here are answers to common questions about air fryer hard boiled eggs.

  • Does the number of eggs change cooking time? As long as eggs have room for air to circulate around them, you don’t need to adjust the cook time. Avoid overcrowding the basket.
  • Will eggs explode in an air fryer? Eggs rarely explode. Occasionally a shell may crack during cooking; the eggs are still safe to eat.
  • Why are there brown spots after cooking? Brown marks can form when the air fryer needs cleaning. Check and clean the basket and heating elements regularly.
  • Why is the yolk green at the edge? A greenish ring around the yolk indicates the egg was cooked a little too long. Reduce the time slightly to avoid this.
  • Are hard-boiled eggs suitable for low-carb diets? Yes. Hard-boiled eggs are low in carbohydrates and high in protein, making them a good fit for low-carb and keto-style diets.
