These sweet, smoky 30-minute baked beans with bacon, bourbon, and maple are an ideal addition to any BBQ plate.

I keep a folder on my computer full of culinary missteps — dishes that didn’t turn out the way I hoped and ended up retired from the blog. Overbaked cakes, soggy fried seafood, collapsed soufflés — you name it. For a while I thought baked beans might join that list. But after testing and refining, this maple-bourbon BBQ baked beans recipe survived and became a keeper.

What surprised me most was how much flavor you can coax out in just 30 minutes. These beans deliver a rich, slow-cooked flavor without an overnight soak or elaborate prep. The balance of sweet maple (or molasses), tangy ketchup and BBQ sauce, a touch of bourbon, and smoky bacon creates layers of flavor that complement grilled meats and summer salads. This is a no-fuss, pantry-friendly recipe that’s perfect for weeknight cookouts and casual gatherings.

Easy Maple-Bourbon BBQ Baked Beans
By Georgia Johnson
Servings: 4 (recipe can be doubled)
Ingredients
- 2 (15 oz) cans great northern beans, drained and rinsed
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite)
- 1/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tablespoons light or dark brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon molasses or real maple syrup
- 1 tablespoon bourbon whiskey (optional)
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 tablespoon butter
- 1 small or 1/2 large yellow onion, finely diced (about 1/2 cup)
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 4 strips low-sodium bacon, cooked until crisp and chopped
Instructions
- Drain the canned beans and rinse them under cold water. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, molasses or maple syrup, bourbon (if using), Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Set the sauce aside.
- In a medium pot over medium-high heat, melt the butter. Add the diced onion and minced garlic and cook until fragrant and softened, about 2 minutes.
- Pour the prepared BBQ sauce mixture into the pot and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, then stir in the drained beans and chopped bacon.
- Simmer gently for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly and flavors have melded.
- Serve warm alongside grilled meats, burgers, or as part of a barbecue spread. Enjoy!
Tips and Variations
For a deeper smoky flavor, substitute half of the bacon with diced smoked ham or add a teaspoon of smoked paprika. If you prefer a sweeter result, increase the maple syrup or brown sugar by a tablespoon. For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne or a few dashes of hot sauce. This recipe scales easily — double or triple the ingredients for a crowd.
Serving and Storage
These baked beans are excellent served hot or at room temperature. They pair particularly well with grilled chicken, ribs, pulled pork, or a simple green salad. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over low heat, adding a splash of water if the sauce has thickened too much.
Why this recipe works
The combination of tangy ketchup and BBQ sauce, sticky sweetness from maple or molasses, savory bacon, and a touch of bourbon creates balanced flavors that mimic a slow-cooked dish. Using canned beans keeps the prep fast while still allowing the sauce to infuse the beans during the 30-minute simmer.
