Family Friendly Snack

Popcorn is a fantastic, family-friendly snack and a satisfying alternative to heavily processed crisps. Store-bought popcorn can be high in salt and the flavoured butter varieties sometimes contain unwanted trans fats, so making popcorn at home is a healthier, fresher option. This salted caramel and dark chocolate version keeps things fun while letting you control the ingredients.

I prefer popping kernels using a small amount of coconut oil for flavour and texture, but you can use any neutral oil you have on hand. Plain popcorn is naturally high in fibre and low in fat, but adding a homemade or store-bought caramel drizzle and a handful of dark chocolate chips turns it into a delicious treat for movie nights and gatherings.

If you want to keep this snack lighter, enjoy the popcorn plain or simply tossed with a pinch of sea salt. But for a special treat that still feels homemade and wholesome, the salted caramel and dark chocolate combination is hard to beat.

You can use a good quality store-bought caramel sauce if you’re short on time, but if you have a few minutes I recommend making your own caramel. A simple refined-sugar-free caramel, made with natural sweeteners and dairy-free options if needed, works wonderfully here and keeps a jar on hand for drizzling over ice cream, brownies, or popcorn.

This recipe is perfect for a cosy Friday night in: popcorn topped with warm caramel, sprinkled with flaky sea salt, and finished with a scattering of dark chocolate chips. It’s a sweet-and-salty combination that both kids and adults enjoy.

Description

A crunchy, sweet-and-salty snack made from freshly popped popcorn, drizzled with salted caramel sauce and scattered with dark chocolate chips. It’s an easy, crowd-pleasing treat for movie nights, parties, or whenever you want a homemade indulgence.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp oil (coconut or neutral oil)
  • 75g / ½ cup popcorn kernels
  • 100 ml caramel sauce (shop-bought or homemade)
  • 1 tbsp dark chocolate chips

Notes: Adjust caramel and chocolate amounts to taste. For a dairy-free option, use a dairy-free caramel and dairy-free chocolate chips.

Instructions

  1. Add the oil and popcorn kernels to a large, heavy-based saucepan and heat over medium. Cover with a lid and wait for the kernels to start popping. Shake the pan occasionally to keep kernels moving and to prevent burning.
  2. When the popping slows to one pop every couple of seconds, remove the pan from the heat and lift the lid carefully to avoid steam. Transfer the popped corn to a large bowl, leaving any unpopped kernels behind in the pan.
  3. Drizzle the caramel sauce evenly over the warm popcorn and sprinkle the dark chocolate chips on top. Toss gently to combine so the caramel coats the popcorn without melting all the chocolate into a single mass.
  4. Serve immediately for best texture. If you like, finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt for contrast.
  5. Storage: Leftover popcorn can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 24 hours. The texture is best on the first day; if it softens slightly, refresh briefly in a low oven for a minute or two.

Tips & Variations

  • Use dark chocolate chips for less sweetness; milk chocolate will make the snack sweeter and more indulgent.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or a few chopped nuts for extra flavour and texture.
  • If making caramel at home, warm it slightly before drizzling so it pours easily over the popcorn.
  • For a festive twist, stir in a few colourful candies or mini marshmallows just before serving.
