I love bagel salmon sandwiches—mini or regular—but there’s something irresistibly charming about bite-sized versions. These mini bagel salmon sandwiches are simple to assemble, elegant for a brunch or book club gathering, and perfect as a party appetizer or light lunch. In this updated post I’ve refreshed the photos and clarified a few tips so you can recreate them easily at home.
Which cheese do I recommend?
My top choices for spreading on these mini bagels are cream cheese, whipped cottage cheese, goat cheese, or mascarpone. Cream cheese is the classic and most commonly used, but goat cheese adds a tangy richness that pairs beautifully with smoked salmon. Mascarpone gives a silkier, slightly sweeter finish, and whipped cottage cheese keeps things lighter if you prefer a fresher texture.
If you don’t have mini bagels, don’t worry—this recipe adapts well. Good substitutes include well-toasted ciabatta slices or English muffins. Both offer sturdy bases and a pleasant chew that complements the salmon. For a low-carb option, small keto buns work wonderfully and still give you the same satisfying handheld experience.
These little sandwiches are ideal when made with high-quality smoked salmon. I prefer wild-caught smoked salmon when available, but choose what fits your budget and tastes. A few fresh garnishes—like a sprinkle of chopped dill, capers, or a dusting of sesame seeds—go a long way toward elevating the flavor.
I first made a similar version for my neighborhood book club and everyone loved them. They’re pretty on a platter and simple to scale up if you’re entertaining. If you try them, I’d love to see your photos on social media or hear how you adapted the recipe for your gathering.

Tasty mini bagel salmon sandwiches—simple ingredients, elegant results.
Ingredients
- 8 mini bagels
- 16 teaspoons goat cheese (or cream cheese as an alternative)
- 1 teaspoon dill, chopped
- 12 oz smoked salmon (approx. 340 g)
- 1 jar capers, drained
- Sesame seed blend or everything bagel seasoning, to taste
Instructions
- If your mini bagels are not pre-sliced, slice them halfway through so each half stays intact while spreading.
- Spread about 1 teaspoon of goat cheese or cream cheese on each half of the bagel. Use more or less to taste.
- Sprinkle a small amount of chopped dill over the cheese. Add a few capers for briny contrast.
- Lay about 2–3 small slices of smoked salmon on the bottom half of each bagel. If slices are large, cut them into smaller pieces so they fit neatly.
- Finish with a light sprinkle of sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning, place the top half of the bagel on, and serve immediately.
Notes
My favorite smoked salmon brands:
- Mowi Cold Smoked Norwegian Atlantic Salmon
- Foppen Norwegian Smoked Salmon Slices
Assembly tip: keep the cheese chilled until just before serving so it spreads smoothly and the bagels remain firm. If preparing ahead, assemble the base (bagel halves with cheese) and add salmon right before serving to avoid sogginess.
Storage: store leftover components separately in the fridge. Assembled sandwiches are best eaten within a few hours; assembled and refrigerated, they can become soft.
Variations: swap dill for chives or a small squeeze of lemon for brightness. Add thin cucumber slices for extra crunch or a smear of horseradish cream for heat.
