Product description

Glow-capable navigation: The compass includes a luminous azimuth ring, luminous magnetic needle, and a sighting window so bearings remain visible in dim conditions or at night. These features help you maintain course when ambient light is limited.

Precision needle and readout: The TruArc Global needle is balanced to tilt up to 20° and is optimized for use around the world. A 1° azimuth scale and a magnified bearing readout make fine adjustments and accurate headings straightforward for professional or recreational use.

Built to endure: The housing is a sealed, waterproof construction intended for repeated outdoor use. The body is a tough polymer baseplate with a sealed capsule around the needle to resist moisture and rough handling in the field.

Map- and GPS-compatible scales: The baseplate offers a reversible inch/millimeter ruler and integrated Romer scales for plotting latitude and longitude. Meridian lines and map-alignment marks let you orient charts quickly and transfer bearings between map and handheld GPS units.

Included in the package: The kit ships with the TruArc10 compass, a protective slipcover, a lanyard for neck or pack attachment, and a printed instruction sheet — everything needed to start navigating immediately.

Size and handling: Measures roughly 5 inches long by about 2.75 inches wide, making it compact enough for pack or pocket while large enough to provide readable map scales and comfortable grip for sighting and plotting.

Pros

  • Luminous ring, needle, and sight aid low-light navigation
  • Globally balanced tilting needle with 1° resolution
  • Waterproof sealed housing and full map scales

Cons

  • Some users report finish wear over time
  • Luminous option may be an extra on certain models
  • Bezel feel and tension can vary unit to unit

VerdictA rugged, user-friendly baseplate compass built for accurate map work and low-light navigation. The TruArc Global needle allows reliable readings across hemispheres, the magnified azimuth window and 1° bezel make bearings easy to set, and the luminous elements help when light is scarce. Solid choice for fieldwork and outdoor trips, with clear map scales and meridian lines for alignment.

Customer reviews

  1. John 1/5

    Lettering wore off fast

Very disappointing — after under two months of use most of the printed markings had rubbed away.

  2. Michael Hadsell 5/5

    Accurate and straightforward

Very accurate and easy to use, whether used by itself or alongside a map. One of the most reliable compasses I’ve owned.

  3. New Survival Skills 5/5

    Compact and feature-packed

This is about a 5" by 2.75" compass that’s easy to hold and operate for novices and experienced navigators alike. The materials feel durable, alignment is accurate, and the magnified azimuth with green index speeds up setting a travel direction. Declination adjustment is simple and a red pointer helps fine-tune between ticks.

  4. David J. Xanatos 5/5

    High-quality map tool

A technical compass that pairs well with topo maps — easy to adjust and packed with helpful features for accurate location plotting. Feels solid and trustworthy for hikes and fieldwork, and downloadable instructions make setup straightforward.

  5. AZLAN ABDUL GHANI 5/5

    Intuitive for seasoned navigators

As a military veteran with jungle land-nav experience, I found this baseplate compass very instinctive. The magnified azimuth window and green index mark make setting and reading a bearing much simpler. Feels comfortable in hand, and the single-sided plotting wasn’t a problem for my use. Overall a solid purchase.

  6. Damian Jenkins 2/5

Bubble and loose bezel put me off

I had hoped to keep this as a backup to my usual compass, but the bezel arrived with a small air bubble and rotated too freely, so it wouldn’t hold a bearing. The design has good points — globally balanced needle, tool-free declination, 1° bezel and magnified readout — but inconsistent bezel tension and optional luminous upgrades were negatives for me.
