Whipped Honey Butter Recipe in 5 Minutes

This whipped honey butter is the simplest, most delicious two-ingredient spread for morning toast, scones, biscuits, pancakes and cornbread. You can make it by hand in a pinch, but using an electric or stand mixer for a few minutes yields a fluffy, silky butter that spreads and melts beautifully.

It also makes a lovely sandwich spread—try it on crusty French bread with chopped chives and natural ham for an unexpectedly dreamy combination.

Easy spread

If you’ve never made whipped honey butter at home, you’re in for something delightfully simple. With only two main ingredients—butter and honey—and five to ten minutes of mixing, you’ll transform ordinary butter into a soft, airy spread that melts over warm breakfast breads.

Using honey elevates the flavor with very little effort. The final taste depends on the honey you choose: floral, light, rich, or caramel-like. Keep it plain for a classic breakfast spread or add spices, citrus zest, or savory accents to match the dish.

I recommend keeping a jar in the refrigerator for quick breakfasts and holiday baking. It firms up when chilled but softens in 10–15 minutes at room temperature, making it easy to scoop and spread.

Testing notes

Use softened butter, not melted. If the butter is too warm it will turn oily instead of whipping light and fluffy.

Whip longer than you expect. Start slow to combine ingredients, then increase speed and beat 2–3 minutes or until pale and airy. It should almost resemble a frosting-like texture.

Add honey gradually. Begin with about 2 tablespoons of honey per stick (1/2 cup) of butter and adjust to taste. Runny honey blends more easily and gives a smoother texture; thick honey can be slightly grainy but still delicious.

If it deflates: the butter likely warmed too much. Chill 10–15 minutes, then rewhip briefly to restore volume.

Make ahead and freeze: whipped honey butter freezes well. Portion into tight-wrapped packages or jars and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator or at room temperature and rewhip if needed to refresh the texture.

Variations

  • Savory-spicy: add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes, smoked paprika, or a dash of cayenne for a butter that pairs well with savory breads or grilled meats.
  • Warm and sweet spices: stir in ground cinnamon, apple pie spice, pumpkin pie spice, gingerbread spice mix, or freshly ground cardamom for seasonal flavors that suit pancakes and quick breads.
  • Citrus: fold in a little lemon or orange zest for a bright, fragrant butter that complements banana bread, pancakes, and scones.

Whip

Whip softened butter with honey until light and fluffy. Several minutes of beating incorporates air and creates a silky texture—don’t rush this step.

Storage

Refrigerate: store in a glass or ceramic airtight container for 2–3 weeks. The spread will firm up when cold but softens in 10–15 minutes at room temperature.

Freeze: wrap tightly or portion into freezer-safe containers and freeze up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or for a few hours at room temperature and rewhip if the texture needs refreshing.

Whipped Honey Butter Recipe (easy, 10 minutes)

Author: Paula Montenegro

Prep time: 10 minutes — Yield: about 1 cup

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted or salted butter, softened but not melted
  • 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey, runny honey blends most easily
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt (optional, adjust if using unsalted butter)

Instructions

  1. Place the softened butter in a medium bowl or the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whip attachment.
  2. Beat on medium speed for 2–3 minutes until the butter becomes smooth and creamy. Increase speed and continue beating until pale and noticeably airy.
  3. With the mixer running, drizzle in 1/4 to 1/3 cup honey. Add the salt if using. Mix until fully incorporated and taste; add more honey if you prefer it sweeter.
  4. Transfer the whipped honey butter to a glass jar or airtight container. Chill to firm, or use immediately at room temperature.

Notes

  • Salted vs unsalted: both work. Use unsalted butter and add salt to taste for the most control.
  • Honey varieties: different honeys bring distinct flavors—try floral, buckwheat, orange blossom, or wildflower to vary the spread.
  • Texture: runny honey is easier to incorporate and gives a silkier result; thicker honey can be slightly grainy but flavorful.
