The Environmental Factor
Product description
What you get: a 3-pound shaker bottle filled with freshwater-sourced diatomaceous earth.
Material and standards: the powder is derived from fossilized diatoms — a silica-rich, inert mineral — and is marketed as food-grade, meeting U.S. Food Chemicals Codex (FCC) standards. There are no added preservatives, chemicals, or fillers.
Packaging and features: the product ships in a plastic jug with a resealable screw-top lid and shaker-style dispensing holes to help control application and reduce spills. The container is designed for repeated use and storage.
How it’s used: sprinkle or dust the powder into cracks, along baseboards, on carpets, around pet bedding, or onto soil and plants to deter and dehydrate crawling insects with exoskeletons. It can also be mixed into storage bins or feed to reduce caking and absorb moisture in dry goods. Apply sparingly to avoid excess dust; reapply after heavy cleaning or rain outdoors.
Performance notes: because it works through physical desiccation rather than chemical toxicity, it requires direct contact and time to affect pests. Its naturally porous structure increases absorbency compared with some alternatives, making it useful for moisture control as well as pest management.
Pros
- Food-grade, FCC-compliant mineral
- Multi-purpose: pest control, anticaking, moisture absorber
- Resealable shaker for targeted application
Cons
- Produces a lot of fine dust and can be messy
- Slow to work; needs thorough coverage for heavy infestations
- Occasional packaging or seal damage in transit
VerdictThis 3 lb food-grade diatomaceous earth is a versatile, chemically inactive mineral useful around homes, gardens, and pet areas. The resealable shaker makes targeted application simple, and the high porosity improves absorbency for moisture control and anticaking tasks. It is effective against many crawling insects when applied correctly, but it works mechanically and requires coverage and time—so

Works well but arrived messy
Very effective product, but it spreads everywhere so use sparingly. My bottle arrived with damaged wrapping and a broken seal, leaving powder in the box; otherwise it performs as described.

Finally rid of silverfish
In my older apartment silverfish were constant. Glue traps failed, but this powder killed them after contact. Odorless, easy to apply, and also useful in flowerbeds to prevent soil crusting. I have sensitive skin and could use it without gloves.

Easy to dust on foliage; I noticed improvement after weeks of frustration. The container is sturdy and reusable when refilled.

Helped with my bedbug cleanup
After finding bedbugs I used this product and saw results. It uncovered an infested headboard that I ended up discarding. It worked for me but required persistence and removing other sources.

Not a miracle cure for my fleas
Tried this for a flea problem using a sifter and left it a week. Still saw live fleas after vacuuming. Not sure if my application was off, but it didn't eliminate the infestation for me.
