Product description

Portable performance and monitoring
The GENX-2 is built for moments of inspiration: it runs from batteries and has a built-in speaker so you can play anywhere. Dedicated headphone and audio outs are provided on 3.5mm jacks so you can connect headphones, a stereo rig or a recording interface when you need higher fidelity or to play silently.

Hands-on sound shaping
This unit offers classic analog building blocks for sound design: a flexible LFO with square and triangle shapes, a resonant low-pass filter with cutoff and resonance controls, and an attack/decay envelope. Pulse width modulation controls and two sub-octave switches add extra harmonic weight so you can dial in thick basses or cutting leads.

Delay, performance controls and keyboard
A built-in analogue delay section provides delay time, feedback and level for everything from short slapback to cavernous repeats. Playability comes from the stylus-driven two-octave touch keyboard and a multi-function, finger-sensitive expression strip above the keyboard for pitch bends, filter sweeps or LFO modulation. An octave selector expands range for more versatility.

Connectivity for studio and modular setups
The rear panel features multiple 3.5mm jacks for CV/Gate and other I/O, allowing the GENX-2 to be controlled by external keyboards or sequencers and to control modular or semi-modular gear. There are also standard mini jacks for audio output and headphones on the side for easy routing in a live or studio chain.

Build, included items and format
The instrument combines a sturdy plastic chassis with a metal touch surface for the stylus-controlled keyboard; a metal-tipped stylus is supplied for playing. The keyboard spans two octaves (24 semitones), making it compact enough to fit in a backpack while still offering a usable melodic range. Power is by batteries for untethered use; dedicated power adapter support is not part of the basic design.

How it’s used
Use the GENX-2 standalone for quick ideas with its speaker and headphones, patch it into an effects chain or run it into a DAW via the line output. Patch CV and Gate to or from other synths to sync sequences and triggers, or loop audio back into itself for experimental textures. The controls encourage hands-on tweaking, so it works well for live performance, sound design and quick studio sketches.

Pros

  • Truly portable with built-in speaker and headphone out
  • Extensive hands-on sound controls: LFO, filter, PWM, envelope and sub-octaves
  • CV/Gate and multiple 3.5mm jacks for easy modular or DAW integration

Cons

  • Battery-only power may frustrate users who want mains operation
  • Stylus and wiring can be awkward for left-handed players
  • Some users report concerns about the stylus cable durability

VerdictThe GENX-2 brings real analog character and modular-friendly connectivity to a very portable package. Its two-octave stylus keyboard and expression strip make for immediate, expressive playing, while LFO, filter, envelope, PWM, sub-octave layers and analogue delay provide broad tone-shaping. CV/Gate and multiple 3.5mm sockets let it both take and send control voltages, so it fits into hobbyist and

Customer reviews

  1. Mahla 5/5

Great gadget — son loves it

Excellent little device. My son enjoys it a lot and it’s held up well to regular use.

  2. AdamH 5/5

Perfect for a midlife synth fix

I wanted something affordable and fun without buying large-brand gear. This delivers hearty functionality, hooks into the rest of the Stylophone ecosystem and gives lots of enjoyment for older players.

  3. Ornella 5/5

Fun and portable — my brother loved it

My brother tried it and was delighted. It’s small, easy to carry and offers lots of scope for sound exploration in a playful way.

  4. Brent Swango 5/5

    Fantastic addition to any setup

Brings fresh textures to a musician’s instrument collection. Hook it up to pedals or other processors and it sings—lots of sonic fun.

  5. WASD 3/5

    Left-hand usability issue

The stylus cable and layout make it awkward for left-handed players with larger hands. Ended up returning for that reason.

  6. pranao walekar 4/5

    Classic analog feel

Solid analogue character in a small package. Loses a star only because the stylus wiring feels a bit fragile and might fail sooner than expected.

  7. Don K. 5/5

Surprising weight from a tiny analog

A really fun analogue instrument—rich drones, gritty leads and tight rhythmic bits. CV in/out makes patching with other gear easy and you can feed it back into itself for creative loops.

  8. Calbeau 5/5

Compact, rugged and a lot of fun

Amazing little synth—compact yet feature-packed. It has a retro look and I customised knobs, but it holds up to daily use and never gets boring to play. Great for synthwave textures.

  9. Erik 5/5

    Great for novices and tinkerers

Not trained musically but I’ve had a blast messing with tones. Can’t wait to route my older stylophone through it for more textures.

  10. Tyler 5/5

    Meaningful upgrade for connectivity

This second-generation model adds useful features over the original, especially the CV and Gate access that lets it work with actual synth rigs instead of feeling like a toy. I’ve patched a drum machine gate into its pitch input to create triggered beeps and it’s great for experimenting. Recommended if you want an intro synth or an expansion to a basic setup. My only gripe is reliance on batteries for power.

  11. Lindsey 5/5

    Pairing models for more layers

Saw demos and decided to get this too—works great alongside the beat model for layered sounds. My kid likes using it to play simple piano lines and it’s very portable; headphones work well for quiet practice.

  12. Marcia Tolhurst 5/5

    Gifted and well received

Bought as a birthday present and it arrived to much happiness—exactly what was wanted.

  13. Mark 3/5

    Small and playful

A fun little piece of kit that’s easy to enjoy and experiment with.
