Product description
The STU-55 is a non-submersible pond and aquarium clarifier built with a stainless steel canister and a separate ballast assembly. The unit arrives with a 55-watt 2G11 base bulb installed and a full set of plumbing adapters: 1", 1-1/4", and 1-1/2" hose fittings plus a 2" PVC adapter. Overall length is about 26.5 inches, making it easy to integrate into most existing filtration lines.
It is intended to reduce suspended green algae and improve clarity in outdoor ponds and water gardens rated for approximately 8,000 to 8,800 gallons, depending on circulation. The clarifier can be mounted vertically or horizontally for flexible placement. For electrical connections the package includes a weather-resistant transformer with a 22-foot cord; the manual advises keeping the ballast away from direct sunlight to minimize overheating and extend service life.
The supplied 2G11 55W lamp is rated for up to about 8,000 hours of operation. For consistent performance, replacement is recommended every 6–12 months, or roughly once per season in heavy-use situations. Routine bulb changes and occasional inspection of seals and fittings help prevent leaks and keep the unit operating efficiently.
Installation is straightforward: plumb the clarifier inline with your pump return using the supplied fittings or the 2" PVC adapter, secure the canister in a sheltered location if possible, and connect the ballast to the transformer. EPA Establishment Number: 97745-CHN-1.
Pros
- Stainless steel housing resists UV and weathering
- Includes multiple hose fittings and a 2" PVC adapter
- Long weather-resistant transformer cord for flexible placement
Cons
- Lamp needs replacing roughly every 6–12 months
- Ballast can overheat if left in direct sunlight
- Some users report wiring or durability failures over time
VerdictA heavy-duty non-submersible clarifier that reliably clears green water and ships with multiple fittings and a long weather-resistant cord. Stainless housing and separate ballast simplify maintenance, but bulbs need periodic replacement and the ballast should be kept out of direct sun to avoid heat issues.

Durability concerns — multiple failures
I’ve gone through three units. The first lasted about three years, the next one a year, and the last only three months. The wiring from the ballast into the lamp housing overheated and failed each time.

Excellent results, solid build
Very impressed with build quality. My 1,200‑gallon pond went from murky green to nearly clear within 48 hours. Extremely satisfied.

Works well but support is weak
Product functions as expected, but a couple small parts were missing. I had spares on hand; manufacturer support and the included instructions were hard to reach and skimpy.

Algae cleared fast after tweaking flow
My 2,000‑gallon pond turned pea soup after losing shade. My main pump was too fast for the clarifier, so I added a small secondary pump and combined outputs. In less than a week the water cleared to the bottom.

Good quality
Well made and a generous size.

Keep the ballast shaded
Upgraded from older plastic models that cracked after sun exposure. The stainless body feels sturdier and housing the ballast separately makes bulb swaps easier. The transparent fitting lets me confirm it’s running from a distance. Manual advises keeping the ballast out of direct sunlight; hopeful this will last many years.
